Meteorologists said that this tropical rainstorm is expected to form quickly over the weekend, potentially bringing'prolonged coastal flooding' to the entire East Coast, from southern Florida to New England. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has noted that the next two Atlantic storm names will be Jerry and Karen, with Jerry likely to form farther away from the US this week. As for the storm that could become Karen, forecasters have already predicted that North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland are expected to get heavy rainfall between Friday and Saturday.
From tropical storm to 'violent': Japan's typhoon classifications
Understanding Japan's system for classifying typhoons can be a challenge. For one, it differs from that used for hurricanes, and there are also differences in how the storms are discussed in English versus Japanese. As Typhoon Shanshan -- which as of Friday became Tropical Storm Shanshan -- moves toward Shikoku, it marks a good time to brush up on the terminology. When checking the news about typhoons in Japan, you may see comparisons to hurricane categories. Essentially, a hurricane and typhoon are the same weather phenomenon -- a tropical cyclone.
Prediction of Bayesian Intervals for Tropical Storms
Chiswick, Max (Independent Researcher) | Ganzfried, Sam (Ganzfried Research)
Building on recent research for prediction of hurricane trajectories using recurrent neural networks (RNNs), we have developed improved methods and generalized the approach to predict Bayesian intervals in addition to simple point estimates. Tropical storms are capable of causing severe damage, so accurately predicting their trajectories can bring significant benefits to cities and lives, especially as they grow more intense due to climate change effects. By implementing the Bayesian interval using dropout in an RNN, we improve the actionability of the predictions, for example by estimating the areas to evacuate in the landfall region. We used an RNN to predict the trajectory of the storms at 6-hour intervals. We used latitude, longitude, windspeed, and pressure features from a Statistical Hurricane Intensity Prediction Scheme (SHIPS) dataset of about 500 tropical storms in the Atlantic Ocean. Our results show how neural network dropout values affect predictions and intervals.
Artificial Intelligence Predicts El Niño Redbrick Sci&Tech
Researchers from China and South Korea have created an AI that can predict El Niño up to 18 months before it occurs. El Niño is a weather event that can occur every 2-7 years, where the area of warmer water in the western Pacific Ocean around Australia spreads across the Pacific. This leads to warmer air rising across the Pacific, causing severe rainfall and drastically changing wind direction and strength across the Pacific. This has huge knock on effects on weather worldwide. El Niño can cause colder winters in northern Europe and droughts in countries such as Australia and Malaysia.
DeepMicroNet: Machine Learning and Microwaves for Estimating Tropical Cyclone Intensity #ExtremeWeather #Hurricane #TropicalCyclone #Microwaves #MachineLearning #ArtificialIntelligence #DeepLearning @UWCIMSS
A deep learning convolutional neural network model is used to explore the possibilities of estimating tropical cyclone (TC) intensity from satellite images in the 37- and 85–92-GHz bands. The model, called "DeepMicroNet," has unique properties such as a probabilistic output, the ability to operate from partial scans, and resiliency to imprecise TC center fixes. The 85–92-GHz band is the more influential data source in the model, with 37 GHz adding a marginal benefit. Training the model on global best track intensities produces model estimates precise enough to replicate known best track intensity biases when compared to aircraft reconnaissance observations. Model root-mean-square error (RMSE) is 14.3 kt (1 kt 0.5144 m s 1) compared to two years of independent best track records, but this improves to an RMSE of 10.6 kt when compared to the higher-standard aircraft reconnaissance-aided best track dataset, and to 9.6 kt compared to the reconnaissance-aided best track when using the higher-resolution TRMM TMI and Aqua AMSR-E microwave observations only. A shortage of training and independent testing data for category 5 TCs leaves the results at this intensity range inconclusive. Based on this initial study, the application of deep learning to TC intensity analysis holds tremendous promise for further development with more advanced methodologies and expanded training datasets. AI could provide solutions for climate change – Hacker Noon
It takes approximately 40 minutes for 82,944 processors on the world's fastest computer to compute what one percent of our brain calculates in a second. Despite this lag, AI has more promising solutions than humans when it comes to addressing the issue of climate change. Climate change is a serious issue that needs immediate attention across the globe. Compelling pieces of evidence that point towards a bleak future include a rise in global temperatures, extreme events, shrinking of the ice sheet, warming oceans, sea level rise, and ocean acidification. There are several good reasons for us to believe that the fourth industrial revolution powered by AI is a perfect opportunity for researchers to embrace AI as a transformative tool to address this grave issue.
exploratory-data-analysis-of-tropical-storms-in-r
The disastrous impact of recent hurricanes, Harvey and Irma, generated a large influx of data within the online community. I was curious about the history of hurricanes and tropical storms so I found a data set on data.world and started some basic Exploratory data analysis (EDA). EDA is crucial to starting any project. Through EDA you can start to identify errors & inconsistencies in your data, find interesting patterns, see correlations and start to develop hypotheses to test. For most people, basic spreadsheets and charts are handy and provide a great place to start.
la-na-hurricane-season-20170527-story.html
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting an above-normal 2017 Hurricane Season, with five to nine hurricanes -- two to four of them Category 3 (winds at least 111 mph) or stronger. The weakness or absence of storm-suppressing El Niño climate conditions, combined with above-normal ocean surface temperatures and average or weaker vertical wind shear across the Caribbean and Atlantic Coast are factors pointing to an active hurricane season, said Ben Friedman, acting NOAA administrator. They expect that three named storms will make landfall in the U.S. April's Tropical Storm Arlene was a rare preseason storm, but it was also an indication of an active season ahead, Friedman said Thursday during a news conference at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park, Md. In the 25 years since Category 5 Hurricane Andrew hit South Florida, forecasting accuracy has improved 65%, said Mary Erickson, deputy director at the National Weather Service.
